Homocysteine is an amino acid, an intermediate product of turning the amino acid from methionine into cysteine. High level of homocysteine in the blood is related to urging sclerotic process and damage of blood vessels. An excess of homocysteine might be caused by nutritional lacks, especially B6, B12 vitamins and folic acid, which are necessary for completing the process of turning methionine into cysteine. An increase of cysteine levels in the blood leads to its accumulation in the tissues, damage to blood vessels, increased blood coagulability and plaque production (sclerotic plaque).
