Iron is one of the most important minerals for the activity of our bodies, it constitutes as a main ingredient in the hemoglobin molecule which its role is to transfer oxygen in the blood, it also participates in the production of different enzymes and it has a role in sugar absorption in the cells from the blood and in energy production.
There are 2 sources of iron: animal-based sources of iron are mostly beef and internal organs, fish, eggs, dairy products, and plant-based sources of iron are: green leafy vegetables, dried fruit, nuts and almonds, legumes and whole grains. Generally, animal-based iron is absorbed better in the body, rather than plant-based iron. Iron deficiency can cause anemia, therefore, one should make sure to consume a proper amount of iron, especially among pregnant women, children, elderlies and people that have chronic diseases.
