Background: Oxidation stress and inflammation are part of the symptoms of the metabolic syndrome.
Curcuminoids are natural polyphenols which contain strong anti-oxidants and are also anti-inflammatory.
Goal: To examine the efficiency of high biological availability curcuminoids supplements on oxidation stress indexes and inflammation among patients with metabolic syndrome. The secondary goal was to perfume a meta-analysis with data from controlled random studies in order to evaluate the level of influence of curcuminoids on CRP values (body inflammation index).
Methods: 117 Patients with metabolic syndrome according to the NCEP-ATPIII (National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III) were examined in a double-blind controlled experiment.
59 (9 of them were dropped out) received a daily dose of 1 gr curcuminoids with an addition of 10 mg piperine (in order to increase the biological availability). 58 (8 of them were dropped out) received placebo. Both of the groups during 8 weeks.
3 Parameters related to oxidation stress as a result of the metabolic syndrome were measured: MDA, SOD and CRP.
Given the importance of marker and risk index CRP for cardiovascular diseases, a meta-analysis of randomized clinical experiments was performed, in order to evaluate the comprehensive influence of curcuminoids treatment on CRP index.
The result: A nutritional supplement that contains a combination of curcuminoids and piperine has showed a significant improvement in the activity of the SOD enzyme in the serum and reduced levels of MDA and CRP comparing to placebo. It seems that the curcuminoids have a significant influence comparing to placebo, when it comes to the decrease of CRP levels.
Conclusions: Consuming nutritional supplement that contains a combination of curcurminoids and piperine for a short term significantly improves oxidation and inflammation situations among people with metabolic syndrome.
Curcuminoids can be considered as natural, safe and efficient inflammation level reducer (CRP).
