Lactose is a disaccharide sugar composed of galactose and glucose that is found in mammals milk only.
The enzyme responsible for its dismantling in our body is called lactase, and it is found in the small intestine. Some of people suffer from a lack of this enzyme or from an improper secretion of it, and therefore the lactose continues through its way in the digestion system until it reaches the big intestine, where it is being dismantled by the intestine bacteria. The side effects of lactose dismantling by the bacteria are gasses, stomach aches and diarrhea.
